New York

I feel a neophyte when it comes to visiting New York. This will only be the second time in my life. Many friends seem to have visited several times.

About ten years ago in our first RV we found an RV park in New Jersey just across the water from Manhattan island. The plan was to take a bus tour of New York City. However they did not allow dogs on the bus so Penny and Lucy the Daschund spent the day visiting Battery Park, while I went on the bus tour. Penny had her own adventure and ended up at ground zero where the twin towers had been.  Meanwhile I enjoyed the bus tour. On the last day I took my bicycle across to Manhattan island and made my way via the subway up to visit the large gothic Episcopalian cathedral - the Cathedral of St. John the Divine near 110th St. I then bicycled around the southern tip of Manhattan island.

In 2009 Edward Rutherfurd published the novel “New York”. A very enjoyable history novel created through the eyes of the Dutch, the Indiginous people and the English.

On a trip to Amsterdam we attended a reception as part of the conference I was at at the place where the Dutch West India Company was formed.  That resulted in the founding of New Amsterdam.

New York was originally settled by the Iroquoian and Algonquian people. In 1609 the Dutch called the state New Netherland and the city New Amsterdam. In 1664 England took over the colony and named it New York. New York City has nearly 9 Million people in it in 2022.

Why is New York City so memorable ?  It is a center for the arts - Music, Opera, Plays, museums. Then there is the musical “West Side Story” and the movie “Funny Girl” with Barbra Streisand.

In five days I can only experience a little of New York City. I will post my diary every few days.
